Mission Statement

The Board and staff of the Cove are committed to providing a home for our residents which offers excellence in health care, comfort, caring, supervision and love.

Each of these elements are tied together with a belief that each resident is a special person in their own right, worthy of our respect, courtesy and the primary purpose of our being here.

Our History

The Cove was founded in 1944 by a group of individuals dedicated to establishing a retirement home for the elderly of industrial Cape Breton.

The Cove started out as a small home in a facility acquired from the Sydney Steel Company.

Over the years, the Cove became a first class nursing home with 108 beds. Special programs were developed to meet the geriatric health, social and spiritual needs of the residents.

Today - Now there are new horizons. The old home on King's Road is replaced by a new building on Alexandra Street. It overlooks the Sydney harbour admiring Westmount and North Sydney. On a clear day you can even see Cape Smokey. This new state-of-the-art facility is home to 110 residents, 68 single and 21 double rooms, five living rooms and dining rooms, plus activity rooms and quiet rooms for when you just want to be by yourself for a while. Also, there is the MacAskill Room, a large living room named after a past Matron of the Cove, Annie MacAskill. It has a fireplace, and chapel and it's large enough for everyone to gather for a concert.

The new Cove is impressive by all standards. It is among the most advanced homes of its kind in Atlantic Canada. And there's a plan to be a leader for the next generation. As more of us live longer and hopefully better, we will need special care homes like the Cove.

With the concept of graduated care the staff and volunteers are helping to re-define the way seniors live.
